Fishing this winter has been consistent thus far. I have had some real memorable days the past couple weeks with some new and returning clients. I had Manny Alonso on board with me for a day and we started the day catching a couple juvenile tarpon. The wind was ripping this day and the conditions were perfect to find some big bonefish mudding in a couple feet of water. As soon as we pulled up to the first bonefish spot I could tell the flat was alive. There were sharks and stingrays working on the flats and it didn’t take us long to find the bonefish. After a couple shots he hooks a nice bonefish but it quickly pulls off the hook. Manny stuck with it and he was rewarded with the biggest bonefish of his life which came in at 28″ to the fork of the tail, a solid 10 pound bonefish.
I recently fished the Cheeca Lodge All American Backcountry fishing tournament with a great person and new client John Kukral. It was our first time fishing together and we had plans to stick with the fly rod for the whole tournament and it paid off for us. John landed 6 snook,1 tarpon and 1 bonefish to take the Fly Division Champion Award.
I also recently had a couple visiting from Minnesota that booked a half day with me and they were interested in catching as manny fish as possible. We did just that and they had an absolute blast catching 13 different species of fish including various snappers, groupers, Spanish mackerels, just to name a few. These types of trips are fun and the best type of way to introduce a kid to fishing.
Fishing is great year round here in the Florida Keys and especially Islamorada. I still have some availability in December and January so please feel free to give me a call and we can schedule your fishing trip of a lifetime. THANKS!
